    President, Tau Xi Omega

    Dear Sorors, Family and Friends,
Welcome to the official website of Tau Xi Omega of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® in Hamden, CT
We're a small chapter with a big heart and have proudly served our community for over 20 years. We work tirelessly to uphold the strong legacy of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® by committing ourselves to our community and striving to affect the lives we touch.

Please take the time to view our website and learn more about us, our organization and our mission.

  • Sorority History

Founded on the campus of Howard University in Washington, DC in 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® is the oldest Greek-letter organization established by African American college-trained women. To trace its history is to tell a story of changing patterns of human relations in America in the 20th century.

The small group of women who organized the Sorority was conscious of a privileged position as college-trained women of color, just one generation removed from slavery. They were resolute that their college experiences should be as meaningful and productive as possible. Alpha Kappa Alpha was founded to apply that determination.

As the Sorority grew, it kept in balance two important themes: the importance of the individual and the strength of an organization of women of ability and courage. As the world became more complex, there was a need for associations which cut across racial, geographical, political, physical and social barriers.

Alpha Kappa Alpha’s influence extends beyond campus quads and student interest. It has a legacy of service that deepens, rather than ends, with college graduation. The goals of its program activities center on significant issues in families, communities, government halls and world assembly chambers. Its efforts constitute a priceless part of the global experience in the 21st century.

  • Chapter History

Tau Xi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® was chartered on December 12, 1992 in Hamden, Connecticut under the leadership of Former North Atlantic Regional Director Erma W. Barron. Realizing there was a need for leadership, service, fortitude and sisterhood in the greater Hamden, Connecticut area the chartering members of Tau Xi Omega worked tirelessly to bring the presence of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority to the area.

Despite many challenges faced, the small but dedicated chapter of Tau Xi Omega has worked hard to uphold the values of Alpha Kappa Alpha by making an impact in the community and becoming a positive influence for all.

Tau Xi Omega has sponsored Big Brothers/Big Sisters of America, Little League Baseball and Soap Box Derby Racing to show support for the community’s youth. The chapter has participated in the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Orientation Program, the adoption of The Connecticut Afro American Historical Society (CAAHS), Habitat for Humanity, numerous food drives and has collaborated with the Christian Community Action Agency.
